If he's a Nexus then it's a really stupid directorial decision (and nowhere in any of the writing from the screen play to the original story does it say that he's a Nexus.) Spoiler for I am Legend. Gene, even in this movie version, its all about evolution. The retro-virus thats used to cure cancer is intended to recombine the patients DNA thus fixing cancer cells. Instead it continues to mutate and rather than just curing cancer, it causes the infected to restructure their DNA becoming a new species they are no longer human. His cure that hes trying to create is another viral strain that will reverse the process. Hes only In the original story the vampires were portrayed as two types. Those who were pretty crazy and were being killed off by doing stupid things (like staying outside) and those that were pretty damn smart. The smart ones were forming a new society even though they had trouble going out in the day. By the way, Blade is sort of a similar plot/storyline. partially successful (the Rats and Ruth.) The ultimate struggle portrayed in the movie is survival of the fittest (the lion metaphor at the beginning of the film). Whos going to become top of the food chain, humans or the new vampires or something else?

The story I read about the "Deckard is a Nexus" theory is that it was after the fact. The major piece of evidence, M. Emmett Walsh's line about the "six skinjobs," was a leftover from an early version of the script. Originally there was another renegade replicant--a kind of older woman/mother type--who was cut from the script after they shot Walsh's scene to save money and tighten the story. Ridley Scott is a brilliant guy, but I don't think he's above capitalizing on that kind of thing by claiming that's what he meant all along when it was just an accident. On Legend, this more recent version does sound more like the Charlton Heston "Omega Man" version with zombies instead of vampires--though probably obviously without the 70's racial stuff going on. The Vincent Price 1964 version has held up pretty well for an older horror film, probably at least partly because Matheson worked on the screenplay.

DON'T READ FURTHER UNTIL YOU SEE THE FILM. / / / Wait wait wait wait wait. I just saw this thing (at the IMAX... nice way to see it). It's not incredibly fantastic/original/etc. but it is entertaining and very well acted. Directng was very good as well, as was the production value. Deserted NYC was fantastic. Monsters were a bit too CGI... 28 days later monsters were more realistic (well... they WERE real people, just sped up). Overall, it's worth watching, but wasn't particularly original, so isn't a "must" see. In any case, I have to TOTALLY disagree with Gene's line: "there wasn't really anything Darwinian/religious/whatever in Legend ". You kigging? The whole movie was a big JESUS thing! The savior of the world? Sacrifices himself to save humanity? Heals the lepers? Saved by an angel? Light = good? Virus hits on Christmas? Movie RELEASED around Christmas. No, it's not a direct translation of the story, but there was plenty of religious undertone (hell, overtone) in there. I'm surprised that in the last scene, he didn't dive at the monsters with the grenade in his hand and his arms spread out to give him the shape of a cross! Seriously! If I were directing it, I would have told him to do that. At that point, it was expected. ------------------------------ I'm the Mega Battle Champion, and Rob and Kevin are not. :P

Seriously, if you ever intend to read the Matheson story, don't read below because it will ruin one of the best endings in all of horror fiction. I'm serious: go read the story now. / / / / / / / / But for those who will really never read it, the ending of the story (and the Vincent Price version) is that the love-interest chick who shows up at the end is actually a vampire, but a member of a new, more highly-evolved vampire elite who are forming a new society. One of the first things they need to do in order to make their society work is to go kill off the last remaining monster of the former era--Robert Neville. So she's there to help her friends bust into his house and finish him off. The big revelation at the end of the story is that Neville has become the creature who comes in the daytime, when the vampires are asleep, and drains all the blood from their sleeping family members so that they wake up and find each other destroyed at dusk. In the dramatic reversal, the reader realizes that Neville is the terrifying monster, the last of his kind, who lives in his impervious castle and sneaks up on the new vampire society members when they are most helpless and destroys them. The meaning of the title, "I Am Legend," is not about sacrifice, but rather about Neville's realization that he's the monster in the end who must die so that society can go forward. It's a twist completely not used in the Will Smith film, although I still liked watching the movie. But it's definitely not a Jesus story in the original version. -Tom

Having read the book, I was sitting there, watching the movie, waiting for the chick to betray him. Which made me even more nervous than I already was--"C'mon, when is she gonna backstab him?" --during the last part of the movie. All in all, I thought it was great. The scene I found the most nerve-wracking was the one where the dog runs into the dark building and Neville chases after it, with nothing but a flashlight to see with. And that one shot in the scene, where he sees all the "vampires" standing still, huddled together, with their backs to him? Brr! That was creepy.

Blair Witch was creepier, cause it was the first time I saw that scene. (by the way, I just LOVE the new "YUKU" quote feature) (insert easily-instertable happy happy emoticon here) If you guys want to catch a cool creey flick which doesn't report to "popouts" to give you the creeps, watch "Bug". The title - I guess I don't think it means what you think it means. And yes .. the book was really cool. Not seen teh movie yet. ****spoiler **** I don't think I can really like the movie though if that dog doesn't die. The way it was done in the book was just so .... striking and shocking. Maybe ... but I'm afraid they are going to get all Hollywood on our asses. One of the reasons why I loved the Departed and .. there was something else recently with a twilight zonish ending ... Oh yeah .... The Mist, was due to a rough ending. ( I had some problems with that movie - the mist - but the ending was killer, even if, or maybe because, I saw it coming).
