And here's another reason I'm good and goddamn sick of these guys. The public laps this stuff up, but the public pays for them, over and over. You're late? Tough shit. You don't want a sports complex to ruin your Brooklyn neighborhood. Even tougher shit, cause this will cost you more than a few bucks from wasted gas or wasted work time. This'll cost you the value of your property. I piss on football and all the other so-called team sports. A scam to defraud the public if ever there was one.

When I was in high school, we had a pretty decent team with this kid quarterback, Steve Young. Someone once told me he went pro or something, and I guess that must be true, since every now and then I see a much older Steve Young in commercials. He was a good kid, but as I used to tell him, the system is stacked in favor of the guy that owns the team and professional sports is basically male prostitution, so watch yourself when you deal with capitalist bosses. I remember he used to politely listen to this, probably because he knew I was interested in his welfare and not trying to razz him or anything.

But with the passage of time, I feel even more strongly that football/baseball/basketball are not just bad for the players morally (certainly they do alright monetarily, but that ain't all there is to life or work). Pro sports as conducted here in the good ol' USA are also an economic rape of the poor. What's funny is that so many of the poor (and the rest of us) are lining up to get fucked up the ass by the teams they support.

It's pretty shameful when your tax dollars subsidize millionaires so they don't have to risk a dime on building a new stadium or acquiring leases at bargain prices. The athletes, the coaches, the owners in professional sports are carried on the shoulders of taxpayers when they win, and even if they don't, you shoulder the burden.

What's happening up at Yankee stadium has killed that neighborhood's outdoor life for a generation of kids, and the supposed economic benefits don't accrue to the citizens. Sure, a few people get jobs, but these aren't good paying long term positions; they're short-term, low paying crap jobs, and McDonalds offers better benefits.

Chazz Pamintieri's character says in "A Bronx Tale" - "Do you think Mickey Mantle gives a damn about you? Do you think he'd waste a dime on you if he even knew you existed?" His character gets the economic argument right; pro sports is an industry like any other except it has a lot less respect for its customers than even Wal*Mart has.

So forgive my deep hostility on this. It is, unfortunately, well informed. Fuck the Giants, the Yankees, the Rangers and the Knicks. And all the rest of them. When Steinbrenner, Bret Ratner and all the rest of them drop dead, I'll do one of those little victory end zone dances if someone shows me how.
