No way his interpretation can top the greatest actor who ever lived.

Yeah, hard to beat Moses.
I just hope that they dont change the original 1954 (6?) novel too much. Now that was brilliant! |

Bad Boyz and Bad Boyz Deux...mostly unenjoyable but that was probably Martin's fault.

You guys have to read the novella if you haven't already. I taught the book last year in a Gothic Fiction class, and even the most jaded, hardcore, Brooklynite literature-hater really got into it. They hated Stoker, Shirley Jackson, Poe, Hawthorne--but they were all saying "thank you for introducing me to Matheson" in their evaluations.

Excellent!
Talk about directors... what do you think of the whole R. Scott/Blade Runner bullshit? Is Deckard a replicant or not? If Ridley thinks he is (or intended that he be one) then he really blew the big one.... Nexus 7 my ass! Deckard is not a Replicant! I actually liked the theatrical release better than the director's cut. Has anyone picked up or seen the Director's Final Cut? Or gotten the 5 dvd set? |

Re: I Am Legend | ||

Bladerunner is one of my favorite movies of all time, even with the cheesy voiceovers. The director's cut is (IMO) even better.
I do believe Ridley intended Deckard to be a replicant, or at the very least to leave the audience uncertain. I think the unicorn dream and Gaff's implications (the origami unicorn, the "you've done a man's job" line, and the longer version in earlier versions of the script) are pretty clear. www.brmovie.com/FAQs/BR_F...-a-Rep.htm As I understand it, Dick and Scott talked about the differences between the story and the film during production, and that while it does diverge from his themes and characters, Dick did support Scott's (/Fancher and Peoples') vision as well. "At the center of the Universe is a loving heart that continues to beat and
that wants the best for every person. Anything that we can do to help foster the intellect and spirit and emotional growth of our fellow human beings, that is our job. Those of us who have this particular vision must continue against all odds. Life is for service. - Fred Rogers (a.k.a., "Mister Rogers") 1928-2003 I would have to say that if you were in a debate with me you would know it and it wouldn't have taken four pages for you to lose it. -SPQR Anarchy, 2005 |

I did see the recent Blade Runner theatrical release (at the Ziegfield, no less). The graphics were cleaned up a lot, and Scott cut out about 5-10 seconds (one memorable line and a couple of snippets in...I think two scenes)(nothing that wrecks the film though). On balance, this is the Director's Cut (1990s-vintage), but one that looks a lot better. So yeah, naturally I like the latest version best.
Deckard being a replicant a) makes for a deeper story and b) is Ridley Scott's stated intention. Officially. He says that in interviews all the time (or did, when the film got released recently). I think he went a little too subtle in signalling this in the film itself, at least so far as "mainstream" audience is concerned, but from my perspective "it's all good..." On topic - curiously enough, "Legend" did not strike me as being quite as deep as "28 Days" (the first one - I am yet to see the second one) - but then "28 Days" was done by the guy who did "Trainspotting", so you'd expect some social commentary on the side anyway. Other than that, and literally three "Hollywoodian" moments (e.g. they could have done the last 60-120 seconds of the movie completely differently)(yeah, there are also I think two instances where the "ammo count" bug pops up - meaning, more rounds are fired off a single clip than is physically possible - but whatever, no biggie), the film was fine. Actually, much better than what you'd usually expect Hollywood to do with this story, and, I think, Smith's finest work today (of course, it's not like he had a lot of films where he'd had the opportunity to act - lthough I was impressed by "I Am Robot" in this respect). |

I need to go see I Am Legend. And the newer BR cut, for that matter. I can tell my movie-geek side is weak nowadays since I haven't seen it.
28 Days Later (as opposed to 28 Days, a Sandra Bullock weepie) is great. 28 Weeks Later was quite good too. When they first announced a sequel I was appalled, but it turned out much better than I expected. I recently watched The Pursuit of Happyness, and Smith displays some genuine acting chops in that one. Good flick. "At the center of the Universe is a loving heart that continues to beat and

Besides being a fine actor Will Smith is someone for the youth of today to emulate. A stand-up guy. I wish I had a link but his 60 minutes interview is excellent.

Re: I Am Legend | ||

The only reason Id recommend I am Legend is Smiths acting and the dog. The rest was crap.
I was left with the feeling that the religious right somehow got a hold of a wonderful Darwinian tale of evolutionary brilliance (Mathesons original story) and decided that humanity really is created in Gods image and that image is embodied in New Hampshire. I was truly disappointed. If Deckard is a Nexus, he must by the pussy series he gets his butt kicked by all of the sixes (including the skin job), he has to rely on his explosive pistol and he has to recover by taking a nap, while the real seven plays a piano that she been programmed to play. Give me a break. Scott has his head up his ass. All that crap with the origami is about one guy messing with a better Blade Runner than himself. All hes saying is if youre so good why are you falling in love with a skin job? Hes acknowledging their own prejudices. |

That's right, Dave. It makes no sense whatsoever that a Nexus 6 model developed specifically for combat and/or assassination duty would have considerably greater physical ability than an experimental Nexus 7 designed to act and appear as human as possible. None at all.
And by the way, that was Vermont. Not New Hampshire. And there wasn't really anything Darwinian/religious/whatever in Legend - more like "Zombiepocalypse where the zombies don't like light or cold conditions". |

You guys are forgetting - Heston's was the second movie version of this novella.
www.imdb.com/title/tt0058700/ Yes - Vincent Price was the first movie Robert Morgan. It's pretty much what you'd think. I actually like this one. |

Re: ... | ||

Gene, the purpose then of a Nexus 7 would be?
(The new Nexus 7 not as good as a 6 but it will run away with your secretary given half a chance!) You might also want to read the Matheson story to understand what Im talking about and even what the title I am Legend is referring too. It's a great book by the way. Theres almost too much info in the following (dont read it if you plan on reading the book.) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_am_Legend |

Dave - I'm going off what I saw in theaters. If there was another subtext in the book, I won't get to it until, oh...I think mid-next year or so. My queue is that long.
To put the Nexus 6 vs. 7 to rest - Nexus 7 models were experimental designs (per official "fluff") to see how close they could come to being human. They were not intended, at least initially, for actual "utilitarian" purposes. Deckard as a Nexus 7 makes a ton of sense from this standpoint (experimental trials), since his job constantly puts him in the "I'm human and you're not and here's why" situation. |
