I have seen this movie (at the Ziegfield, no less), and I find it to be good. Very dark ("I Am Legend" seems all cheery by comparison), but with a
good deal of (dark) humor as well. And the singing...it's not the greatest ever, but it doesn't grate on you either. Passable, in other words, and more
than made up for by the directing.
And, of course, there are rivers and fountains and gushers of blood. Once you get past the first, oh, 30-40 minutes, that is. They don't waste much time on the two lovebirds (the daughter and the sailor) either. Johnny and Helena carry their characters quite, quite well. Their "pie" duet got an almost-standing ovation from the audience.
Anyhow. Better than most of the "wide-release" films I've seen for some time (excluding all the "serious" stuff like the two Tommy Lee Jones flicks).
