I play Fantasy and am not too bad at it. I know very little about the game (FOW) aside from the fact that there is early, middle, and late war. Where should I begin? Which time period is played most often? which army do you recommend? Do the armies really have very different styles to them? I guess there is a main rule book and then army books?? Thanks a lot! There are a lot of players who give it a go and drop out. You may want to try some lists - you can certainly "borrow" any of my Germans (and I have lots.) Get a couple books from late and mid war and go from there - you can even check out different models - FOW doesn't require that you use their models to play their games. (I like theirs but some of the guys prefer tanks by other manufacturers.) For me I sort of picked a "historic" army that I wanted to play with - the SS Adolf Hitler. They were all over Europe on both fronts and in the Balkans for a spell. They were elite and had the best equipment and one of the best tank commanders of the war (Witman).

Some armies are easy to use in multiple periods, like infantry, where you'll usually only need a few extra blisters to upgrade from middle to late. German and russian tanks are pretty different early, middle, and late, while the western allies are basically shermans in MW, plus upgraded shermans (firefly/sherman 76) in LW. Pure infantry armies are pretty defensive, mechanized armies have to be good at both, while tank armies will mostly attack. The scenarios are objective based, which would probably be the most different to you. It's kind of like football, anyone can win on any given sunday. Just more likely for some teams than other, but take nothing for granted. The basic infantry armies are all solid. The differences come in training and motivation, and some of the support choices. If you like artillery, the brits and americans get great special rules, but their infantry are pretty average (confident trained is what it's called). The russians are solid in their basic infantry and tank lists, but I find them kind of boring as their rules kind of steer you in a specific direction. Veteran lists (most germans, all paras, some allied infantry) play a bit differently because their upgraded ratings make them cost more points, but it also allows you to do things trained lists can't do. Mechanized armies are kind of rough for beginners; there are lots of little decisions to make, and they will lose to a few types of armies (such as pure tank lists) unless they are specifically tuned to defeat that type of list. Americans are the best mechanized list by far, though the new german panzer lehr list looks interesting. If Dave's available, I could bring my stuff in for a demo in the next week or two, so you could get a chance to play and ask questions.

Now, I'm not being facetious here, but is this actually true? I'm not proud, neither am I ashamed of the fact that I've never actually seen football played ever before in my life. I always assumed it was like a more violent but more exciting and speedier version of baseball - i.e. the team with the most money wins most often. Actually back on topic - Hard experience has taught me, do NOT start with motorized/mechanized infantry. Zero tells you why above, and I'll just add that it has been a terribly frustrating experience that took me about two years to actually figure out. The only reason I stuck with it is because I'd purchased the army and painted it and was invested by the time I realized its a totally different experience than tanks or infantry, or recon, for that matter. I'd go with either tank company or infantry company. I'd pick a nationality you personally like and want to paint. I'd also do as Zero counsels: consider whether you want veterans (a force that can do a lot, but which is hampered by low numbers) or trained (a larger force that sometimes just won't do what you want it to). Both are about equally challenging and fun, as far as I'm concerned, just different. With Soviets in early and mid war, you do have the option of Fearless Conscripts (a huge force that, though not neccessarily skilled, is well motivated). Just remember that in late war, this stereotype goes away, so you'll need to be able to play confident trained in late war with Soviets. Good luck and welcome.
