Cloverfield: Great Movie? Or Greatest Movie? |
Lead | |
|
Caught this a week or so ago at one of the big Times Square theatres and was positively amazed. One of the few movies that's kept me literally on my seat
and excited + involved throughout the whole thing. Thought it was well paced, with plenty of surprises and enough footage of the monster to satisfy (big reveal
at the end was a bit too much even). Definitely believed the whole amateur-filmed thing, meaning the much criticized "flat actors" were actually
rather believable. Definitely seems to be a love-it or hate-it type of movie, and I think it's definitely worth at least a viewing by everyone as one of
the best horror movies in a long while.

I like how little they tell you in the trailer. Reminds me of the "never show the monster" effect that they used very well in The Blair Witch
Project. I'm really looking fwd to watching it.

I loved it. I thought it had a uniquely realistic perspective that made it great.

Very good movie. I agree with Ed (Oh God!), the perspective was unique. Highly recommended.
There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."

I loved it too. I think some of the reviews were far too harsh on the characters. From the perspective in which it was told, big character arcs for every
person would be completely bogus. The little New York details made me miss the city, though. If you haven't seen it yet it's worth paying to see it on
the big screen.

I thought they did a great job with the characters. They seemed very real without seeming formulaic. They gave you just enough backstory to make it realistic
that they would go back into the danger.
I thought the scene where the character had to tell his mother his brother was dead was painfully realistic and fantastically acted.

Yes the characters reacted like real people. I was very sad about the girl who was bit. I have not felt that touched by a movie character in a very long time,
not since the death of Theoden in Return of the King (always my favorite from the books too).

Theoden's death is dramatic, but none is sadder than Boromir's.
In any event, the negative reviews scared me away but since you all liked it I might just go see it this weekend.
On a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero.

I'm not at all suprised by the negative movie reviews. Why? Because it's not really a traditional 'movie'. It's really something different
than anything we've seen before (even Blair Witch, one of the shittiest movies I've ever seen). So of course the critics don't like it.

The fact that you hated the Blair Witch possibly as much as I did makes me think that this movie might be worth checking out.

To me, blair witch was all hype and no substance at all. Cloverfield only shares basic cinematography style with it. The difference is though that someone with
some skill say 'hey, if we're going to limit ourselves to a handycam, how can we make the handycam view actually enhance things as opposed to limiting
them.".

Agreed Larry, agreed. See this movie then judge for yourself. Worth the ten or so dollars. YMMV of course.

WorldBFreeII wrote: Part of what did that for me was how quick and sudden and how confused it all was. fully agree with you there. Also she was hot.
Also, did anyone find the camerawork/handheld thing so convincing as to completely forget about the fact that it was a monster movie in the beginning? The party felt completely realistic and suckered me into the world of the movie fully. |

Fantastic flick. Very un-hollywood. Greatest movie ever? No. But one of the best I've seen in ages. Deifintaely up there with the best. I thought it was a
bit too shaky, though. I didn't get to the point of nausea, but watching it (particularly the first couple of scenes) didn't leave my stomach feeling
any the better for wear. Even most digicams have a stabilization feature nowadays. And the battery they had on that camera was fantastic.
**SPOILERS** **SPOILERS** **SPOILERS** **SPOILERS** I also thought it was refreshing that they didn't have to expalin the creature through voodoo or alien invasion, or undersea monstrosity. And the fact that the tape was recovered gives you just enough of a clue that the human race did OK in the end. Good times!

I'm betting it was fuel air bombs:

**SPOILERS** **SPOILERS** **SPOILERS** Also, clover is a plant which can grow in notoriously poor soil--i.e. powdered rock and dead lichen--due to the fact that it can pull nitrogen out of the air (thank you Discovery Channel). After obliterating manhattan, it would quicklly turn into a giant cloverfield.

I realized that as well as I was leaving the theater. Great title.

I also enjoyed the film. Much of the criticism leveled against it stems from it being comparable to a "9-11" scenario. It makes me wonder if the
film took place in Paris or London, would the critics review have been more favorable.
I also like the casting, they were typical modern twenty-something yuppies that had normal human flaws and were not super all-around great individuals such as the boy in the transformers movie or Peter Parker. Lance

**SPOILERS** **SPOILERS** **SPOILERS** Agreed Ed, must be fuel air bomb because the EM pulse would have most likely destoyed the camera's storage. Well done Nidal now the title makes a ton of sense.
